Keeping Druridge Bay Special
Britain’s coast is enjoyed by millions of people, but is subject to a range of pressures including development, intensification of farming, water pollution, visitor use and coastal erosion.
Careful management is required to protect the natural qualities which people come to enjoy. In 1995 Druridge Bay was designated as a “Heritage Coast”. This means that it is recognised nationally for its landscape quality. All of the beach and much of the dunes are also protected as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of their importance to wildlife.
The local authorities, conservation bodies, landowners and local communities involved in managing Druridge Bay work together through a management strategy, which aims to:
- protect the landscape for future generations
- provide the right conditions for wildlife
- make sure the beach and water are kept clean
- provide facilities and encourage enjoyment of the bay which does not damage its qualities
- involve the local community.
To achieve these aims we:
- Maintain paths and car parks
- Provide information
- Run events and activities
- Support volunteer groups
- Warden key areas
- Restore damaged dunes
- Manage woodland
- Monitor natural changes
- Liaise with communities, landowners and user groups
You can help:
- by taking your litter home and not causing damage
- by reporting anything you see that is harming the bay, or by helping out as a volunteer!
