Druridge Bay
A Strategy for Management to 2010
The Partnership has produced this Management Strategy which to drive action to protect and enhance the special qualities of Druridge Bay, for the benefit of the Bay, its communities and visitors. Its vision for the Bay in 2025 which is:
Druridge Bay is nationally recognised for the outstanding quality of its landscape and environment. The positive management of these assets is the basis for an exceptional visitor experience and strong, sustainable and vibrant communities.
The Management Strategy’s Action Plan seeks to deliver management through six themes, and these and their long-term aims are:
Landscape — Improve understanding and appreciation of the Bay’s landscape of the Bay, positively manage pressures for landscape change, and ensure new development and land uses are complementary to the landscape character of the Bay. As well as the existing Heritage Coast designation, the Partnership would like to see the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status extended further south in the Bay.
Historic Environment — Develop active community involvement in the recording, interpreting and conservation of the historic environment, enable historic sites and features to be an important element in the attraction of the Bay, and ensure new development is complementary to the historic character of the Bay.
Natural Environment — Improve understanding of the natural environment through survey and monitoring of the existing species and habitats, and conserve and enhance the diversity and condition of the special natural features of the Bay. Where possible, the Partnership will ieither ncrease the extent of threatened, or reintroduce lost, natural and semi-natural habitats and species, as well as improving public access to information about the natural environment in order to increase enjoyment and understanding of the Bay.
Environmental Quality — Ensure that sources of land and water pollution are controlled and progressively reduced, complete the reclamation and remediation of contaminated former industrial land (including the making safe of dangerous structures), and meet the requirements of the national rural beach award.
Living Communities in and around Druridge Bay — Develop a sense of pride, ownership and involvement in the environment of Druridge Bay among its local communities, and ensure that those communities benefit from their proximity to Druridge Bay through the provision of good local services, higher levels of economic activity and sustainable tourism.
Enjoying Druridge Bay — Promote and manage Druridge Bay as a major sustainable coastal visitor and tourism destination in the NE of England, while taking full account is taken of the needs of the local communities and the environment in promoting enjoyment of the Bay. This will include establishing high quality and well co-ordinated recreation and information provision across the Bay, as well as supporting the participation in outdoor recreation of groups who are presently under represented including people with disabilities, ethnic groups and people who live in inner city areas.

The Druridge Bay Partnership is using funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop a project that will:
- integrate the management of the dunes and countryside inland
- further establish the mosaic of interlinked wildlife sites so that Druridge Bay is nationally recognised for its variety and abundance of habitats and species
- work to adapt to climate change
- tell the story of the development of the Bay’s landscape
- play a much more prominent role in assisting in the rejuvenation of this part of Northumberland
- be seen as a model of sustainable tourism.
The project will be the basis for a further application to the Heritage Lottery Fund in November this year, under through its Landscape Partnership Grant Scheme.
The Partnership is interested in your opinions on this and a series of drop-in sessions have been arranged where you can come and discuss concerns about the Bay and what you think should be done in the future, together with two events looking at wildlife and historic heritage. These will take place on:
August
| Tuesday 5th | Lynemouth Resource Centre (2 pm – 7 pm) |
| Thursday 7th | Hadston House, Hadston (10 am – 1 pm) |
